Discoverability Challenges in the UK and Europe

Leonie Heath Marketing Assistant - Taylor & Francis, Library (Books)

Throughout 2018 Taylor & Francis have attended an array of conferences and visited libraries across the UK and Europe. From discussing skills for the future academic library with CILIP, to giving interactive presentations at Bibliothekartag and BIS Swiss Library Congress, we set out to speak with librarians and find out the biggest discoverability challenges they face in their libraries.

We created a poll for librarians to take part in at conferences, asking them to vote for their biggest discoverability challenge.  Over 300 librarians cast their votes, helping to identify the main obstacles that they would like to overcome. Challenges ranged from the accessibility of MARC records to encouraging patrons to use school websites rather than Google, with the clear winner being increasing awareness of available content. Take a look at the infographic below to see a summary of the results!

Following on from the poll, our aim is to help transform these challenges into successes. We are interested to find out more about the challenges faced by librarians, so please do talk to us at any of the conferences we attend – we would love to hear from you!
