We all know that a library’s impact reaches far beyond the shelves. An academic library is much more than housing for books and sleep-deprived students.
The academic library allows researchers to access online databases as well as the more traditional physical book.
The changing role of academic libraries
The impact of the library on students has always been great, but is now stronger than ever.
As well as housing information, libraries now offer training and support to their patrons to enable them conduct research effectively. They can also provide help with the publishing process, should a student choose to follow that route.
It provides a space for academics to find support for their research and empowers them by connecting them with the information they need, when they need it to manifest ground-breaking discoveries. Library services can aid academic success.
How can librarians support researchers?
It seems more and more, students are turning to library staff for guidance through the intricate process of submitting their research for publication.
The functions of the university library include, but are not limited to:
- Loaning materials
- Categorization of materials
- Study spaces
- Reading spaces
- Induction training
- Material procurement
- Referencing services
- Research training and guidance
- Research support services
- Monitoring and improving library usage
As the role of librarian adjusts to these ever-shifting student needs, Taylor & Francis is continuing to work to help librarian’s champion researchers and de-mystify the publication process through “How Researchers Changed the World.”
For new authors submitting an article to a journal can be intimidating. We want to help give your academics the tools and information they need to succeed. We are doing this with two free 12-week learning programs, so they too can ‘change the world’ with their research.
How the learning program works
There are two different programs, aimed at
These programs deliver the ultimate step-by-step guide to publishing papers, boosting impact, and building a profile. Your researchers can sign up to either program (or both) and will receive one chapter, via email, every week for 12 weeks.
Chapters cover such areas as:
- leading a research team
- finding funding
- open research including open data
- navigating peer review
- engaging policymakers
- effective presenting
The programs have been created by Taylor & Francis and the How Researchers Changed the World team using research into researcher’s key pain points as they look to publish and build their profile. We’ve aimed to address and support key areas that researchers struggle with and offer tips for efficiency and mastering critical skills.
The How Researchers Changed the World podcast
Now once that paper is finally published for everyone to read, the end result can feel…quite depersonalized. There is often a disconnect for the end reader between the research output and the vision that went into creating it.
The How Researchers Changed the World podcast, supported by Taylor & Francis, aims to humanize academic content by shining a light on the people and stories behind the research.
The podcast showcases the real-world relevance of academic research, telling the story behind truly ground-breaking findings. Each episode of the series unpacks one academic’s motivations for their subject, the challenges of their work, and the impact it’s had on their field and wider society. The series covers a range of topics including ethics and AI, sustainability, technology in education, the political significance of social media activity, and dementia care.
